Suspects Released By Police Threaten To Attack Ilorin Community Residents

Residents of Alapa area of Ilorin in Kwara state have been gripped with fear over a threat by some suspected hoodlums to cause mayhem in the area.

New Times learnt that the suspects were earlier involved in some violent acts in the community where they inflicted bodily injuries on one Mr Ganiyu Oloduku and another, Mr Abubakre Alabi Idiagbon on the 15th of May, 2022.

The hoodlums were also said to have made a threat to the life of one Mallam Abdulrahim Obamaku, a resident whose lawyer filed a complaint to the police covering the area who made arrest but granted the suspects bail after interrogation.

However, upon their release yesterday from police custody, the hoodlums in company of their sponsors returned to Alapa to celebrate their freedom and made the threat to cause more havoc in the community.

The elders of the community who were not comfortable with the development were said to have reported the matter to the appropriate authorities for further actions.

In a statement on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said “the modus operandi of the serial killer is to pretend as a commercial motorcyclist popularly known as okada rider and pick his targeted victim as a passenger.”

Such victims, Oyeyemi said, are mainly women, who would be “taken to an isolated area, raped and brutally murdered in cold blood.”

According to the police spokesperson, the command is making efforts to apprehend the hoodlum; adding however, that it is necessary to alert the public to be on their guard and be wary of any okada rider with whom they want to embark on a journey, especially at night.

“For safety reasons, the command hereby advises that passengers should endeavour to demand the phone number of any okada rider who wants to carry them in the night.

“They should also make a call to such a number to ascertain its authenticity.

“This will give security agencies a lead in their investigation in the event of any untoward development,” Oyeyemi advised.
