Reps Pass Bill For Setting Up NYSC Trust Fund

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Trust Fund is set to take take off as the House of Representatives has passed the bill seeking to establish it.

The NYSC Trust Fund (Establishment) Bill passed the third reading at the plenary on Tuesday.

The legislation is titled, ‘A Bill for an Act to Establish National Youth Service Corps Trust Fund for the purpose of providing a Sustainable Source of Funds for the National Youth Service Corps, Skill Acquisition, Training and Empowerment of Corps Members, Training and Retraining of the Personnel of the National Youth Service Corps, Development of Camps and NYSC formations and Facilities therein; and for Related Matters.’

Sponsored by a member of the House, Samuel Akinfolarin, the NYSC Trust Fund (Establishment) Bill 2021 passed the first reading at the House on December 16, 2021; and the second reading on January 20, 2022.

Meanwhile, a group, Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency, has hailed the House for passing the bill, urging the Senate to concur with the passage.

The Convener of the CSJET, Isaac Ikpa, at a press conference in Abuja, also urged President Muhammad Buhari to speedily assent to the bill after its passage by the National Assembly.
Ikpa said, “The House is obviously full of members that look at the future of the nation and consider just how well our growth as a people is important to the success of governance. Our place as a nation in the continent and the world is only further emphasised with bills such as this one, making it known who we are and how we conduct our affairs.

“It is good to know that the full nation is coming to the realisation of acknowledging that NYSC is the best way to imbibe the spirit of nationalism in our youths. Now is the time for our young individuals to understand that the nation that they have once thought of giving up on, actually cares about their welfare and survival.

“This is the time they need to understand that they are Nigerians and not just Igbos, Yorubas, Hausas, and other tribes in the country. Meeting people from different parts of the country has helped many individuals understand other cultures and promotes unity amongst diversity. NYSC has made possible for our Nigerian youths.”

According to him, most of the youths have difficulties trying to find jobs while there is usually little to nothing to help with launching out those who receive entrepreneurial tutorship and developing skills. “It is, therefore, a victory for the nation that there is now a light of hope to help these youths launch out on their own; something to help them start up a business,” he noted.

“During his period in office, he involved himself in acts incompatible with the aims and objectives for which CDHR was formed by the founding fathers.

“As a result of the above acts of Mr. Jonathan Giama, he was investigated along with one Mr Kehinde Taiga who served as the state chairman at that time and both of them were found culpable and shown the way out by expulsion from the body as referred to above.

“For the avoidance of doubt, there is only one CDHR in Nigeria which is duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, Abuja with its registered office at No. 43, Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Ikeja, Nigeria with branches in almost all the states of the federation including Delta State where I serve as the State Chairman having been elected on 22nd June, 2021 by delegates from all the units in the state.

“CDHR has a well- structured organization with National Executive Committee (NEC) with an erudite lawyer Dr. Osagie Obayuwana, a two-time Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Edo State as National President with great men and women who have made their marks in their chosen careers and callings as members.

“The body also has a Board of Trustees duly Registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission with a legal juganaut, Femi Falana (SAN) as Chairman surrounded by other eminent lawyers academics and business moguls as members.

“As a test of genuineness, Mr. Jonathan Giama is hereby challenged to direct the general public to the address of the National Secretariat of the CDHR of his imagination and who in Nigeria are members of his National Executive Committee (CEC) and members of the Board of Trustees of the same which I know, he cannot and for that reason, he should shut up henceforth and look for something to do to make a living instead of parading himself as a member of CDHR and even its state chairman forthwith.

“I, Comrade Elder (Chief) Edariese A. Peter is and remains the only person who can fly the CDHR flag in Delta State as its chairman for now till the end of my tenure.

“I call on the general public to beware of impersonation as represented by Mr. Jonathan Giama.

“I am equally calling on all the law enforcement agencies in Nigeria particularly in Delta State to arrest Mr. Jonathan Giama to investigate his claims as CDHR Chairman Delta State and prosecute him if he is found culpable for impersonation to save the uninformed and unsuspecting members of the public from falling victim to Mr. Jonathan Giama who is bent on using the name of CDHR to extort money from his victims to oil his dubious and expensive lifestyle.”
