Protesters Give Obaseki Ultimatum On Insecurity

Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki has lost the control of the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to Vice Chairman, South-South of the party, Chief Dan Orbih.

Protesters with the body of one of the seven persons allegedly killed in their area by criminal herdsmen on Thursday evening stormed Government House, Benin.

The protesters from Ovia Northeast Local Government Area of Edo gave Governor Godwin Obaseki a three-day ultimatum to ensure adequate security of life and property.

They said that they brought the body to Government House because policemen in their area only told them to deposit the body in the mortuary.

The protesters stated in the last few weeks, they had experienced frequent killing of innocent residents of the area by the rampaging herdsmen.

Seven persons were killed by criminal herdsmen in the farming communities of Ugboke, Oshodi, Okokodo, Ariyan and Yoruba camp in the LGA.

The leader of the protesters, Michael Idahosa, disclosed that residents of the affected communities could no longer bear the incessant attacks by the criminal herdsmen.

He said: “We are here to protest against the killings by herdsmen in our communities. Governor Godwin Obaseki came to Ovia Northeast LGA in 2017 when herdsmen killed one of our persons and he promised to tackle the problem of herdsmen in our area, but Edo State government did not address the issue.”

Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, who received the protesters, said that the state government would intensify efforts at providing adequate security to check the rising spate of the activities of killer herdsmen in the state.

Shaibu said: “As a state, we have made up our mind not to lament, but to look for solutions on how to protect our country and our state.

“There was also an attack in the early hours of today in Niger State. It is a national problem. As we speak now, Governor Obaseki and other governors are in Abuja to discuss this insecurity issue in our country.

“You will remember that we are bringing in local vigilance members to collaborate with law enforcement agencies. We are strengthening our system and we will still need your support.

“We do not want to take laws into our own hands, but at the same time, we cannot fold our arms and watch the people kill us. Take it easy; some bodies are yet to be found, I have had a discussion with the security agencies. Their personnel will move into the area.

“I can assure you that they will recover bodies of all the victims and we will intensify the security in the area.

“We will categorise the area as one of the flashpoints in Edo State so that you can sleep with your eyes closed.”

Police Release Six, Detains Two, Reveals Next Action Over Davido's Son's Death

By John Michael Ojo
The Lagos State police command has confirmed the detention of two of the eight domestic staff  members  of singer Davido invited  for questioning over the demise of his three-year-old son, Ifeanyi.

This was contained in a statement made by the command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who stated that following  a serious interrogation, six of the domestic staff brought in for questioning, have been released while the chef and the nanny whose duty was to cater for the wellbeing of the little boy, have been detained.

A source, who confirmed the development, said it was the standard practice for the police to carry out an autopsy in such a case, adding, however, that the police would desist from the move if the deceased family members kick against such.

The source stated that “Though the family members are not saying anything yet because they are still in shock until anybody says stop, the standard procedure is to conduct an autopsy and we are going to follow that procedure just like in any case of death,” the source said.

Explaining why the cook and the nanny were still being held by the police, the source said, “It was the work of the nanny to take care of the child (Ifeanyi); the nanny was negligent or how could the boy have left the house without her knowledge?” he questioned.

Stating further he said  “The boy left the house, walked to the back where the swimming pool is situated and fell into  it. Nobody noticed until much later. At that point in time, he had drowned and was at the bottom of the swimming pool.

“So, they brought him out and rushed him to the Lagoon Hospital, where the doctors tried unsuccessfully to revive him. They left the hospital and rushed the boy to Evercare Hospital, where he was declared dead.

“They have deposited his corpse in the mortuary for an autopsy to reveal the cause of death. All the domestic workers at home when the incident happened have been questioned by the police but only the nanny and cook were detained.”

Another source who is very familiar with the heartbreaking incident revealed that the nanny was with Ifeanyi when the chef came to join them. The nanny was said to have moved slightly away to receive a call. When she returned, she couldn’t find Ifeanyi and assumed he was with the chef but the chef said he had left Ifeanyi with her. They began to frantically look for Ifeanyi all over the house for close to 20 mins until a security guard spotted him in the pool.

No one could explain how the boy got in the pool. Davido and Chioma were said to have returned from their trip to the devastating news.

“Davido ran mad. He literally removed his clothes and wanted to run into the streets. He was held back. He and Chioma are inconsolable.” the source added.
