Son of Governor’s Aide, Others Sentenced For Circulating Nude Video

Court Jails Ex-VC 35 Years For N260m Fraud, Forgery

For circulating a 18-second nude video, Aminu Hayatau Tafida, a son of the Special Adviser on Social Investments to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State, and two others have been sentenced to four years and six-month imprisonment.

Those sentenced alongside Aminu are Umar Abubakar and Masaud Abubakar Gidado.

The trio were handed an option of N400,000 fine each, including compensation in the case that has suffered several adjournments.

Delivering judgement on Tuesday, Chief Magistrate Shu’aibu Ahmad of the Magistrate’s Court sitting in Sokoto, said the prosecuting counsel had proved his case beyond any reasonable doubts and as such, the three accused persons were convicted for the very offences put forward before them.

While citing Section 209 ACJN of Sokoto 2019, Shu’aibu, however, gave opportunity to counsel to the defendants to make any other submission before reading his sentences.

On the strength of that, counsel to all the defendants separately but unanimously said they did not intend to call any other witness. They, however, pleaded that justice should be tempered with mercy on grounds that all the defendants were youths who had the future before them and first-time offenders; hence the need to consider option of fine as well.

“We are appealing to this honorable court to show leniency in its sentence, more so that they have all shown remorsefulness over their actions. We are, therefore, appealing that other options should also be considered as sentencing convicts is no longer a fashion this time around.

“If in case this court so wishes to sentence them, the court should be liberal taking into cognisance the economic hardship being faced this time around, we so appeal,” they stated.

In his sentence, the presiding magistrate, Shuaibu Ahmad, said he had taken into consideration the fact that the defendants were first-time offenders, and that he would therefore be lenient but give maximum sentence.

Shu’aibu said, for the offences of indecent act which go contrary to Section 171 of Sokoto State Penal Code, the defendants are sentenced to pay a fine of N200,000 each ,whose default will lead to two-year imprisonment.

He said for the offence of sharing and sale of obscene book, the defendants are sentenced to pay 50,000 each, for whose default will lead to two- year imprisonment.

Shu’aibu further said that, for the offence of abatement, Section 48 of the Sokoto Penal Code provides N50,000 naira or conviction for six months in the case of default.

Shu’aibu also said that each of the defendants would pay N100,000 compensation to the complainant.

Reacting to the development, both the prosecutor, ASP Simon Sule; and the complainant said they were satisfied with the judgment, and, according to them, the pronouncements will serve as a deterrent to others.

Sitting extreme right of graduands is Promise Joshua.

Promise Joshua expressed gratitude to God for His grace upon her life and for her academic success in a record time. She also paid a glowing tribute to her late father Prophet TB Joshua whom she described as: “the best dad in the world, a personification of love with a towering and unquantifiable passion for education and better humanity for which his impacts with indelible marks cut across frontiers of several nations and human races across the world”.

She also praised her mother for her steadfastness as a quintessence of true womanhood “for which I thank God and very proud of”.

Promise moving forward to receive her MPA degree certificate from the dean.

AfAW Seeks Support For Abandoned Mother, Twins

The Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) has urged the government of Benue state to intervene and provide Ms. Msendo Idun and her babies necessary support.

According to a statement by the Director of AfAW, Dr Leo Igwe, Ms. Idun, 20, is at the Foundational Memorial Hospital Makurdi where she gave birth to twins on Sunday, March 26, 2023.

“She has been discharged but cannot leave the hospital because of her inability to pay the medical bills. Msendo was billed 150,000 naira but has only paid 55 thousand naira. The father of the twins, Terwase, abandoned her shortly after she took in. The mother of Terwase, Mrs. Adzenda, asked the son to reject her and the pregnancy”, Igwe said.

He added: “For nine months, Msendo managed the pregnancy without any help from Terwase or his family. The last time she saw Terwase was in December 2022. Also, neither Terwase nor his mother has bothered to check or call on her since she gave birth on Sunday. The AfAW contact in Benue has visited the hospital and confirmed this difficult and worrisome situation. He reported that Msendoo looked weary, sad, and malnourished.

“Msendo’s case is not linked to witch persecution which is the main focus of AfAW. But last night, the AfAW intervened and donated one hundred thousand(100, 000) naira to help Ms Msendo settle the medical bills. Msendo needs more assistance to take care of her babies. The AfAW calls on state authorities in Benue to take necessary measures to support and ensure the well-being of Msendo and the babies. The government should compel Terwase to provide child support and fulfill his parental obligations and responsibilities as required by law.”

The AfAW called on the state chapter of the National Human Rights Commission office and the International Federation of Women Lawyers, the state department of social welfare, the ministry of women affairs, child rights and women groups, charity organizations, well-meaning individuals in Nigeria and beyond to intervene and ensure that Msendo and the babies get the help that they urgently need.
